Porsche scores big on a number of year-end awards

porsche scores big on a number of year-end awards picture

In a year that has been full of uncertainty, recalls, and what-have-you, at least one brand is ending it on a really high note.

For better or for worse, Porsche has had a really good year and their fortunes haven’t gone unrecognized by a lot of their peers. The automaker from Stuttgart, Germany is being recognized by a variety of media outlets for a year where it has released a steady diet of high-performance and ultra-popular cars. While some people might think that the company was lucky to have the year it has had, the folks at Porsche would prefer to describe it as “business as usual”.

Over in their homeland of Germany, the Deutsche Automobil Treuhand (DAT) listed three of Porsche’s sports as having the best value retention with the Porsche 911 leading the pack, followed by both the Boxster and the Cayman. Thee cars in the top-three. Pretty impressive.

On the other side of the world in the Land Down Under, a jury comprising of eleven motor journalists from the “Sydney Morning Herald”, “The Age” and “drive.com.au" chose the Porsche Boxster as the best convertible of 2010 and more importantly, giving it the “Drive Car of the Year Award” for the second year in a row.

Porsche 918 RSR Racing Lab scoops up EyesOn Design award for ’Best Concept’

The Audi A6 may have bagged this year’s EyesOn Design award at the Detroit Auto Show for “Best Production Vehicle”, but another auto manufacturer is taking home the award for “Best Concept Vehicle”.

That award goes to Porsche’s stunning 918 RSR Racing Lab prototype. Defined by a design that features muscular wheel arches, dynamic air intakes, and a pulpit-like cockpit, the 918 RSR Racing Lab was the unquestioned showstopper of the 2011 NAIAS. It was even dressed up in a new “liquid metal chrome blue” paint finish to complement Porsche’s now famous hybrid orange finish on the front-to-rear racing stripes.

The 918 RSR Racing Lab wowed the judges comprising of Willie G. Davidson, Harley-Davidson’s EVP & Chief Styling Officer; Tom Matano, the Academy of Art University’s Executive Director of Industrial Design and Jack Telnack, Ford’s now-retired global VP of Design, beating out the likes of Kia’s KV7 Crossover and Ford’s Vertrek SUV for the title.

TopSpeed’s Best of 2011: Geneva Motor Show

topspeed 8217 s best of 2011 geneva motor show picture

The Geneva Motor Show is one of the biggest shows of the year and the 2011 event certainly did not disappoint. With over 70 cars lined up and ready to take our breaths away, choosing our favorites between them all was not an easy task.

Sure, there were some easy choices, like the brand spanking new Lamborghini Aventador or the Jaguar XKR-S, or brilliant tuning projects like the ABT R8 GT S. Then there was the job of tossing out the not-so-brilliant vehicles like the Mitsubishi Global Small or the rather useless Rinspeed Bamboo. The 2011 Geneva Motor Show brought out cars from one side of the spectrum to the other, and rifling through them took some time. Some may not agree with our choices and that’s okay. However, everyone can appreciate a beautiful or highly efficient car when they see one, and we’ve gathered some exceptional specimens to share.

2011 World Car of the Year finalists officially announced

2011 world car of the year finalists officially announced picture

The Geneva Motor Show is now in the rear-view mirror, which means that the spotlight has now turned to the New York Auto Show this coming April, and if there’s one thing that we can all look forward to in New York, it’s that it will be the site of the 2011 World Car of the Year awards.

All in all, 39 vehicles were included in the initial entry list comprising of new cars from all over the world. From these 39 cars, the list was whittled down to ten finalists with the top three contenders from these 10 cars receiving the final nominations for the 2011 World Car of the Year title.

The cars that are subject for nomination are selected and voted on by an international jury panel consisting of 66 automotive journalists from 24 countries around the world. Each member of the panel has been appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the merits of their experience, credibility, and influence within the auto industry in their respective countries and, to an extent, in the region.

Eligibility for the World Car award is important in determining which cars can be nominated for the awards. This year, all candidates for the awards must become available for sale on at least two continents from January 1, 2010 to May 30, 2011.

Apart from the World Car of the Year title, other awards that will be announced at the New York Auto Show include the World Performance Car of the Year, the World Green Car of the Year, and the World Car Design of the Year.

2013 Ferrari 599 Replacement

ferrari 599 replacement picture

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a replacement for the Ferrari 599 Fiorano, but this is the first time we can offer more details about the new sports car. For starters, expect it to make its official at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March with sales beginning later in the year.

The 599 replacement will be built on an all-new chassis and will borrow design elements from both the 2012 Ferrari FF and the Ferrari California. The model will get modified bumpers and new headlamps, a modified bonnet, and a new exhaust system with tips that sit higher than on the current 599.

Fans of true sportscars can also breathe easier knowing that the replacement 599 will not be a hybrid model. It will instead be powered by a direct injected 6.3-liter V-12 - the same as in the the FF - with a total output of 700 HP. The engine will be combined with a rear-wheel drive system and the Ferrari’s latest seven-speed dual clutch gearbox.

Ferrari 246 Dino

Ferrari 458 Italia will receive a Scuderia version

Click to enlarge [Ferrari 458 Italia will receive a Scuderia version]
Ferrari 458 Italia will receive a Scuderia version
Ferrari has revealed it will produce six new models before 2013 as part of Fiat's restructuring plans that were announced today. The six new models include a successor for the Ferrari Enzo hypercar and a hardcore version of the 458, like the 430 Scuderia.

The first model to be revealed will be the Spider variant of the entry-level 458, scheduled for 2011. Next year we will also see a new generation of the top of the range model 612 Scaglietti. This car will most likely provide the base for Ferrari’s first ever hybrid model. Codenamed F151, the 612 Scaglietti successor’s name is not yet clear.

In 2012 we’ll get to see the most anticipated Ferrari, the next hypercar that will build on the Enzo’s fame. Produced between 2002 and 2004 in just 400 units, the Enzo was powered by a V12 engine. No further details have been released about the Enzo successor. Also in 2012 Ferrari will showcase an all-new version of the 599 GTB Fiorano, currently known as F152.

The Ferrari California will receive a major facelift in 2013 and is referred to as the California M by Ferrari insiders. Finally, the last model that will be revealed in 2013 is a hardcore version of the 458 Italia, most likely to be named the 458 Scuderia. The company announced that it will not build more than four standard production models, so that the range will look like today, with the 458, the 599, the 612 and the California. The next Enzo is considered as a special model and it is not part of the standard range.

Ferrari has also stated it wants to continue the differentiation between its sports cars and its grand tourers, so that there will be no crossover models between the 458 and 599 supercars and the 612 and California cruisers

Hot News: 2012 Audi R10

Our amazing scoop pictures show how the Audi range is set to develop – and here’s its crowning glory. These images show one designer’s take on how a new R10 – a V10-engined flagship supercar – could look.

But this isn’t just a flight of fantasy. According to Auto Express sources, Audi is seriously considering a new supercar to sit above the acclaimed R8. It’s set to share the chassis of the forthcoming Lamborghini Murciélago replacement.

As well as a sculpted body, the car would get a mid-engined layout and a low-slung, two-seat cabin. Audi’s famous aluminium spaceframe chassis technology will be combined with carbon fibre to keep weight down and provide supreme strength.

The R10 will also be wider and longer than the R8, while four-wheel drive ensures it’s firmly planted on the road. Power is expected to come from a turbocharged 5.0-litre V10 with up to 600bhp – that would give 0-60mph in just over three seconds.

Preliminary prototypes, disguised as Lamborghinis, have been spied near the Nürburgring in Germany, although the car is unlikely to arrive before 2012. For more details click here.

New Car: 2011 Buick Excelle

At the Guangzhou Auto Show, GM debuted its latest addition to the Chinese Buick range - the five-door Excelle XT. Marketed as a coupe-like premium compact hatchback, the Excelle will hit Chinese showrooms in 2010.

Based on the same front-wheel drive platform of the soon-to-be-unveiled Chevrolet Cruze, the Excelle will go on sale in China with a choice of either a naturally aspirated 116-hp 1.6L four-cylinder engine, a peppier 138-hp 1.8L mill, or a 1.6L turbocharged engine that produces 181 hp and up to 196 lb-ft of torque in Superboost mode. A six-speed automatic gearbox comes standard with all engines and no word was given regarding a manual option.

Although the Chinese-spec Excelle shares a platform with the Cruze, it is actually a closer relative of the 2010 Opel Astra, with similar styling. Both cars receive a revised suspension relative to the Cruze, with rebound springs up front to reduce understeer and give a sportier driving experience. Out back, a Watts linkage is added to the package, rather than a Panhard rod. The changes should make the Excelle a much more dynamic car to drive than the Cruze.

Of course, the big question is whether the Excelle will make it across the pond to U.S. soil, where it could join the all-new Regal and LaCrosse as an entry-level addition to Buick's domestic lineup. The car pictured looks virtually identical to the small Buick GM showed us months ago, although the version we saw was a four-door sedan. In the U.S., a sedan likely makes more sense for both buyers' tastes and Buick's image, so the possibility of a U.S. Excelle coming with four doors instead of five is a strong one. And, of course, Buick could also choose to rename the car for the U.S. market, so we're not even sure if our Buick will carry the Excelle moniker.

What do you think of the Chinese-market Buick Excelle? What engine, body style, and name would you like to see on the U.S.-spec car?

Hot News: Tata to Build Nano Hybrid

India's Tata Motors may produce a hybrid model based on the Nano, the world's cheapest car, Reuters reports.

A South Korean publication quoted company chairman Ratan Tata as saying his team is looking into the car, but failed to elaborate on the subject. He went on to mention that the automaker's Ace light truck may be exported and produced in South Korea in the near future.

Tata's $2000 entry-level model has become a huge success in the market, with orders and production levels nearing capacity. It's so popular that officials had to implement a lottery system to purchase one. Profits are currently on the upwards swing for Tata after a string of massive losses.

If a hybrid Nano does come into fruition, it's safe to assume it'll be just as popular as its gasoline-powered sibling, if the price is right, of course.

Hot News: Audi A2 Confirmed

Audi is currently planning a new A2, company boss Rupert Stadler has told Autocar.

"As we gave the A1 that nomenclature there’s clearly room for another product and another concept between the A3," he admitted.

Stadler wouldn’t be drawn on what exactly a new A2 could be, but admitted that it would be an obvious propostion.

"If you don’t have to explain a car like the A2 then it works," he said.

However other insiders have admitted that the A2 is likely to be an ‘E2’: an electric car based on the the A1 but with a unique bodystyle and look.

Stadler also quashed rumours that Audi was planning a car based on the VW Up!, possibly badged A0, saying that there was no possibility of the company slotting in a car under the forthcoming A1 supermini, which will be launched at the Geneva motor show in March.

Spied: 2011 Smart ForTwo

Mercedes is planning its cleverest Smarts yet and we have the pictures to prove it. Captured by our eagle-eyed spies, these images show a mule of the next-generation Fortwo city car carrying out some hot-weather tests in the south of France.

Our sources have also revealed that the new Fortwo will form the base for a lager, stretched Smart, currently known as the Fortwo+2.

Limited by its lack of space, the Fortwo has seen itself fall behind more practical rivals such as Toyota’s iQ, and with more premium vehicles on the way, including Audi’s A1 and the rumoured BMW Isetta, Smart has begun work on its own four-seater. The new Fortwo+2 will also get rear doors.

The standard Fortwo will remain a strict two-seater though, with both new cars continuing to be rear-wheel-drive, and housing the engine below the floor at the rear. The added length for the extra seats in the Fourtwo+2 coming from the longer wheelbase.

The Fortwo is expected to arrive in showrooms late next year with the four-seater arriving by 2012. Both cars will be available with a wide range of engine options, and will likely include a hybrid and an electric version. For more details click here.

Gates of Vienna News Feed 7/4/2011

Gates of Vienna News Feed 7/4/2011The last of the Habsburgs, former Prince Otto Von Habsburg, has died at the age of 98. He was the son of the last Austrian emperor, Karl I, who succeeded Franz Josef during the Great War. Had he not been assassinated in 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand would have succeeded to the throne, but Karl became emperor instead. Prince Otto was seven years old when the family titles were abolished and their estates confiscated.

In other news, even though Greece has surrendered much of its sovereignty to the EU, and despite the passage of its new austerity plan, S&P has issued a warning that the country still faces a risk of default. Analysts are dubious about the Greek government’s ability to pay back the necessary €6.8 billion to its creditors by the end of the year.

Carnita’s Law

OK, that’s not really the name of this new Australian law, but it might as well be.

I reported last month that the Belligerent Burqa Bimbo, Carnita Matthews, had successfully appealed her conviction for filing a false police complaint, on the grounds that her full veil (niqab) meant that there was no proof that she was in fact the person who had filed the complaint.

That’s an example of the Islamic version of chutzpah, known in Arabic as qutspiyyah*.

There’s nothing that can be done now about Ms. Matthews, who is as free as a bird. However, her case has prompted New South Wales to pass a new law giving police the power to require the removal of a burqa (or any other full-face covering, to avoid being accused of religious discrimination) so that drivers’ identities may be confirmed during traffic stops:

Police Given Power to Remove Burkas

New South Wales police conducting routine car stops will be given the power to demand the removal of head coverings for identification.

Premier Barry O’Farrell says cabinet approved the move on Monday so police could properly identify motorists or any other people suspected of committing a crime.

“I don’t care whether a person is wearing a motorcycle helmet, a burka, niqab, face veil or anything else, the police should be allowed to require those people to make their identification clear,” he said in a statement.

“I have every respect for various religions and beliefs but when it comes to enforcing the law the police should be given adequate powers to make a clear identification.”

Mr O’Farrell says there has to be a balance between religious customs and a police officer’s ability to do their job.

“It’s also an issue with other religions. It’s also an issue with other cultures,” he said.

“But whether it’s a driver’s license or passing through customs, identity checks are required in this day and age and we’re determined to ensure police have the powers to undertake them when required.”

The new laws come in the wake of a successful appeal by a Muslim woman who had been sentenced to jail for falsely accusing a police officer of forcibly trying to remove her burka.

The sentence against Carnita Matthews was quashed on appeal last week.

The magistrate said he was unable to confirm whether Ms Matthews had made the accusation as police had been unable to see the face of the woman who made the complaint.

Attorney-General Greg Smith says he will not be appealing against the Matthews decision, but says the new laws should prevent a recurrence of the case.

Police have had the power to ask women to remove face veils during the investigation of serious offences but did not have such powers during routine car stops.

Forget the Flotilla — Free Constantinople!

As reported in the news feed last week, supporters of the new Gaza flotilla were angered by the Greek government’s refusal to allow the flotilla to set sail from Greek ports.

The flotilla’s advocates in Ottawa responded with a demonstration in front of the Greek embassy on Saturday, and Vlad Tepes was there with his video camera. As Vlad points out, this was a Political Special Olympics, and not worthy of our attention — except for one fellow at the very end of this report:

Just a Lavatory Lady

The lavatory lady

For a change of pace on this Fourth of July, here is an essay from Politically Incorrect about an occupation that is under-appreciated in Germany, that of the lavatory lady. Many thanks to JLH for the translation:

Just a Lavatory Lady

by Schnitzelhuber

Last weekend, my family and I were in our favorite shopping center. We often came here when the children were small, and today it is a much-loved tradition.

We always set up our base camp at our favorite Italian restaurant in the shopping passage. This is the central meeting place for eating, drinking, talking, telephoning. Girls are constantly walking through swiftly, sometimes boys, mother and daughter or — so it doesn’t get too expensive with soccer jerseys and other soccer paraphernalia — sometimes also mother and son. Shopping bags pile up around the table and everyone is content, if you just don’t think about the dwindling bank account.

In the entrance area to the shopping center is the public toilet. For years the cleanest public toilet in the whole area. For years kept up and cared for by the lavatory lady, whose small table and plate for tips as well as her chair stand between the two toilet doors. The anteroom is completely visible to all passersby, set off only by a transparent glass panel. Last weekend, I was waiting near there for my son. The attendant was just coming out of one of the lavatories with her cleaning materials and, breathing heavily, sat on her chair. She is, pardon me for saying so, no longer young and, pardon again, quite corpulent. Even without a medical degree, it is impossible to escape the feeling that her health is not the best.

As I waited and watched the heavily breathing lavatory lady, I thought of the news reports on the car radio on the way to the shopping center. Some new ideas from the Bleeding-Heart Industry on the subject of Islam and social policy.

Dear lavatory lady, the “blessings” of the Bleeding-Heart Industry have never reached you. They will never reach you.

Never will some ethics commission, a social commission or a Do-Gooder commission take an interest in you. Never would a commission on the dignity of the human being come upon the idea of investigating whether your workplace — between two toilet doors and completely visible to thousands of people all day long — is compatible with human dignity. Never would some leftist, addled nutcase start a vigil or a demonstration for the legitimate rights of lavatory ladies.

Never would representatives of the Protestant Church call for prayers for or with lavatory ladies. Never would anyone get the idea of setting up a prayer room near the toilets for you (as is happening now at my daughter’s university at the cost of the taxpayer) because no one is interested in whether, when, where and to whom you pray. For you, no one would even build a small room near the toilets where you could eat during your break, away from the smells and the glances of thousands of passersby.

Never would the central council of lavatory ladies intervene for you, because there is none.

Since you neither make demands nor are you violent, neither live at public expense nor have problems with our social values, you would never be invited to a lavatory lady conference by the distinguished minister of the interior. Never would a president of the federal republic cry out on the national holiday: Lavatory ladies belong in Germany.

Dear lavatory lady, the Do-Gooder industry is not interested in people like you, because they cannot gain anything from you. You work and earn your own money. From morning to night, you do the dirty work, in the truest sense of the word. At a hard workplace, with no social reputation, with no prospect of advancement, and surely with no great salary.

You earn you money by honest, ostensibly lowly work. You are a brave, plucky, honorable woman. You can look at yourself in the mirror every morning with a good conscience. You are free.

Dear lavatory lady, in my thoughts, I salute you. God bless you.

Waving the Flag

September 11th

Happy Independence Day to all our readers in the USA! And to anyone else who wants to share a beer and a burger on the back deck with the rest of us Americans.

I may be (heck, I know I am) oversensitive and paranoid, but does anyone else find it strange that Google’s Fourth of July doodle does not have an American flag among its iconic representations of the USA?

Go over and check it out — it has the Statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate Bridge, fireworks, an eagle, a guitar with a pumpkin (?), and other odds and ends of traditional American iconography. But no flag.

Accidental or deliberate?

An oversight, or subliminal NWO conditioning?

You decide.

Considering that Gates of Vienna concentrates on the resistance to Islamization in Europe, we have a surprisingly large number of American readers. Only a small portion of them comment, but we know they’re out there because of their steady 50+% in our traffic stats.

We also have a lot of Americans among our donors. This is a nation of generous and open-handed people.

So here’s to our fellow countrymen on this, the 235th anniversary of our independence!

Our deep gratitude to everyone who supported us during the Recent Unpleasantness. It’s not a personal battle, although it sometimes feels like one, and personal support from our regular readers makes it easier to deal with.

Many thanks to everyone, and have a great Fourth!

We’re having huge thunderstorms here, so I was forced to post this using dialup…

Note: This is a festive post. Please refrain from unpleasant and contentious comments on sensitive topics. You all know what those are. You can discuss them somewhere else, or at another time. We all need a break.

I’ve bumped this post to the top and will keep it there for a while because so many additional signatories, including several Americans, have asked that their names be added to the list. Scroll to the bottom to see who’s there — some may surprise you.

Update (3:04am EDT): Added one more. (3:24am EDT) Added another one. (3:33am EDT) Added a Dane.

Update (7/1/2011 11:51am EDT): While I was asleep, eight more people signed on. That gives us a total of 27. Some of the names will be familiar to you…

Also: Europe News should never have been on the signature list. That was an error on my part, and I apologize.

(3:56pm EDT): Added another American. (9:55pm EDT): Yet another American.

As most readers already know, earlier today Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs posted a prominent repudiation of the English Defence League, including references to their alleged infiltration by “neo-fascists”.

A group of Counterjihad bloggers and writers has joined together to publish this open letter to Ms. Geller. Most of us are Europeans, but not all — we also have signatories from the United States, Canada, and Australia.

If you are a blogger or a writer and want to add your signature to this letter, please send your name and URL to me (unspiek [at] chromatism [dot] net), or to the proprietors of other sites where it has been posted.

Update (9:13pm EDT): Two more signatories have been added to the list. (12:35am 7/1) One more added. (12:49am) Added another. (1:16am EDT) Added one more.

Dear Ms. Geller,

We the undersigned are writing to register our astonishment and dismay at your public denunciation of the English Defence League, and in particular your reference to the “neo-fascists that had infiltrated the administration of the group”.

This is a grossly inaccurate and unfair slander against the leaders and membership of the EDL, who have never wavered in their refusal to include neo-Nazis, fascists, or adherents of any other ideology that seeks to divide people based on their ethnicity. The core mission of the EDL has always been, and remains, to stop the encroachment of sharia and Islamic fascism.

For the past two years the English Defence League has been on the front lines of the resistance to sharia and militant Islam in England. Its leaders have put their own lives in danger by doing so. They live under constant threat, not just from murderous Muslim zealots, but from their own government, which has harassed and arrested them repeatedly. Tommy Robinson, the leader of the EDL, has been arrested multiple times, and is currently facing trumped-up charges designed to put him and the EDL out of action.

To paraphrase Geert Wilders: “I was dragged to court by leftist and Islamic organizations that were bent not only on silencing me but on stifling public debate.” The EDL is being dragged into a kangaroo court of uninformed public opinion. The more people’s fears can be raised, the more quickly debate can be smothered.

In the final analysis, as Geert Wilders points out, the strength of our community depends on the freedom we feel to “enter our convictions in the open lists to win or lose”.

All communities inevitably experience conflicts based on differences of opinion. It is crucial that we approach one another’s efforts in good faith, presume the other’s efforts to be well-meaning until conclusively proven otherwise, support initiatives made by others that further our common cause, and refuse to be dragged into parsing ever more finely our differences.

Our ideal of the “perfect” can kill any merely “good enough” effort.

Your unfortunate statements were picked up and repeated by other websites and blogs, some of them quite prominent and well-respected. This has done harm to our common cause, and has driven a completely needless wedge between the American and European wings of the international Counterjihad.

To help heal the damage that has been done, we insist that you apologize in a public forum to the English Defence League.

Its leaders and members are heroes, and their organization is widely considered a beacon of hope in Europe. All Europeans who resist the Islamization of their countries look to the EDL for inspiration, and all of them stand in solidarity with it in its struggle.

We strongly request that you reconsider your deplorable words and withdraw them.

Sincerely yours,

Camp of the Saints: Vacation Time… Not!

Lampedusa map

Thanks to the Mediterranean refugee crisis, this year’s vacation season on Lampedusa is not working out very well. In fact, it’s not working out at all.

But before we get to that story, here’s a new report on the enrichment situation in Sicily, where a group of African migrants were refused residence in a hotel:

Hotel in Ogliastra Rejects 18 Refugees

(AGI) Cagliari — A hotel in Lanusei (Ogliastra) rejected 18 African refugees, of the group of 52 that landed this morning.

The hotel manager initially offered to give them shelter, having reached an agreement with Sardinia’s civil defence. The six families with children, the first refugees of the 436 landed in Sardinia and to be given shelter in Ogliastra, were then transferred — following the intervention of the Provincial Council and of Social Services councillor Beniamino Lai — to a hotel in Girasole.

And now for the vacation news from Lampedusa. The island — which has been overwhelmed with more than 40,000 culture enrichers from Africa so far this year — is no one’s favorite holiday destination this summer. In fact, a lot of people wouldn’t even vacation there for free.

Here’s the story from Europe News, as translated by JLH:

Italians Will Not Accept a Lampedusa Vacation Even If It Is Free
June 30,2011 posted by hd on unzensuriert.at

The Italian government’s efforts to stimulate tourism on the island of Lampedusa with the help of TV spots as well as a visit from superstar Angelina Jolie, reported on by the media, have apparently not been able to convince the public. So reports the independent French news agency. Novopress.

According to a poll on summer vacation trends among Italians, which was published by the lobbying group of the tourism concern, Confesercenti, almost a third of Italians (29%) would refuse a free vacation on Lampedusa, 22% would go “with some trepidation.” Fewer than half of those polled would only take a vacation in Lampedusa if it was free. The poll did not even ask how many would pay for their vacation.

These numbers are that much more convincing, since, 3 of 10 Italians do not want to take any vacation this year because of the continuing crisis (in 2010, it was 2 of 10). This year only 33.5 million Italians are making a vacation trip, versus 39 million in 2010. 52% of those asked will take their vacation in Italy.

Money back if vacationers see immigrants.

The poll caused consternation among the hoteliers of Lampedusa, since attempts had already been made to reassure potential customers. “We are prepared to give tourists their money back if they see an immigrant on the street.” said Antonio Martello, chair of the local hotel organization. “A ship is always standing by in the harbor to take immigrants away a few hours after their arrival. The crisis of recent months is completely over and the government deserves credit for putting in a system that functions perfectly.”

But the effect hoped for by the tourist businesses was clearly missing. In June, bookings fell 90% versus the same month in 2010. An 80% decline is forecast for July.

Fordman: Human Accomplishment: Technology

The fourth installment in Fjordman’s series on Human Accomplishment was published at Tundra Tabloids while I was away in D.C. Some excerpts are belatedly below:

In the technology ranking of Human Accomplishment, the instrument maker and mechanical engineer James Watt (1736-1819) of Scotland and the prolific inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) of the USA, who created an early research laboratory, are tied for the maximum score of 100. There is a large gap from them down to Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), who is then followed by Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) from the Netherlands, one of the greatest polymaths in all history; Archimedes of Syracuse (ca. 290-212 BC); the Italian radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937); the Roman engineer Marcus Vitruvius Pollio – Vitruvius – from the first century BC, author of the celebrated multivolume work De Architectura (“On Architecture”); John Smeaton (1724-1792), a great civil engineer from Leeds, England and a member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham; the English inventor and steel manufacturer Henry Bessemer (1813-1898); and Thomas Newcomen (1664-1729), an English ironmonger and creator of the atmospheric steam engine, the first version engine that did useful work.

After them follows Charles Babbage (1791-1871), the English inventor of the mechanical computer; the innovative German-born inventor and engineer Carl Wilhelm Siemens (1823-1883), whose brother Werner von Siemens (1816-1892) founded the telecommunications company Siemens in Berlin in 1847; the dynamic English industrialist and ironmaster John Wilkinson (1728-1808); Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), the prolific scholar, writer, publisher, diplomat and statesman from North America who also invented the lightning rod, bifocal eyeglasses and the Franklin stove; the English physicist and inventor Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875); the industrial chemist and armaments manufacturer Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) from Sweden, who invented dynamite and used his wealth to found and fund the famous Nobel Prizes; the great English naturalist and electrical engineer Michael Faraday (1791-1867); Denis Papin (1647-1712), the French-born engineer who invented the steam digester and the pressure cooker in 1679, major stepping-stones in the evolution of the steam engine; the English civil engineer George Stephenson (1781-1848), who together with his son Robert built the world’s first inter-city public railway line employing steam locomotives between Liverpool and Manchester in 1830; and finally the American painter Samuel Morse (1791-1872), one of the main creators of the electric telegraph and co-inventor of Morse code.

Names such as Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach, Jean Lenoir, Nikolaus Otto and Rudolf Diesel are listed for their contributions to the development of internal combustion engines and cars, the English entrepreneur Richard Arkwright for aiding the development of a modern factory system during the Industrial Revolution, and Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre, William Fox Talbot, George Eastman and others for the creation of photography. But why is a first-rate scientific instrument maker like Jesse Ramsden not mentioned at all?

Unwavering Support for Humpty Dumpty

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.”

“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.”

“The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master — that’s all.”

             — from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Humpty DumptyPace Humpty Dumpty, this essay will examine the phrase “unwavering support”, and who is to have the mastery of it.

Before venturing into those turbulent waters, however, a brief update on the Recent Unpleasantness is in order.

During the last few days I have been accused of many wrongdoings. Last night, within the space of three hours, I was publicly identified as a “garden variety anti-Semite” and also accused of “surrendering to the Eretz Zionists”.

So which is it to be? Hitler’s worthy heir? Or tool of the Jews?

I have just one thing to say to my masters in Tel Aviv: Hey, Binyamin: I need a raise!

*   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *

The criticism most frequently leveled at me since the whole mess began is that I have been “needlessly divisive”, “caused a rift among allies”, “created unnecessary internecine conflict”, and similar malfeasances.

But is that really what I did?

If there is any “internecine conflict”, how did it begin?

Let’s go back to Pamela Geller’s original indictment of the English Defence League (which I have separated by sentence to make it more readable; the full text is included as an appendix to this post). As part of her condemnation, she said:

They [the EDL] now have clearly been infiltrated by the worst kind of influences, something that had successfully staved off for years, and they’re no longer staving it off.

[…]

Now that the person whom I most trusted in the EDL, Roberta Moore, has resigned, as she was increasingly uncomfortable with the neo-fascists that had infiltrated the administration of the group, I too am withdrawing my support from the EDL.

I hope that genuine anti-jihadists in Britain will also leave the EDL and work with Roberta on starting a new group that will resist definitively and firmly all attempts to divert it from its mission of fighting against jihad and for human rights. [emphasis added]

Now, this is a blatant call for division within a particular Counterjihad group, the EDL. Ms. Geller stated her opinion quite clearly: “I hope that genuine anti-jihadists in Britain will also leave the EDL.”

In effect, she called for the EDL to be divided into factions, one of which would be headed by a dissatisfied former member who had left or been forced out of the organization, and for whom Ms. Geller declared her complete support. Atlas Shrugs is a widely-read and influential blog, so her declaration of support — for what had previously been a tiny faction in a intramural conflict — had an enormous effect, leveraging a minor spat into major trouble.

So who’s being “divisive” here? What caused the latest “internecine conflict”?

You decide.

Pamela Geller responded to our open letter by declaring that

My support for the EDL has been unwavering…

And this is where Humpty Dumpty makes a cameo appearance.

Do Ms. Geller’s previous words — “I too am withdrawing my support from the EDL” — mean exactly what she chooses them to mean, neither more nor less?

Or has she forgotten that she said them?

Or does she simply not understand self-contradiction?

The fact of the matter is that her support for the EDL did waver. To be more precise, it evaporated as soon as a single person having her own agenda put forward the completely unsubstantiated charge that “neo-fascists” had infiltrated the group at the leadership level. Ms. Geller then published this charge — which, in these PC times, is the most deadly accusation that can be leveled against an organization — without doing her own investigation, without undertaking due diligence, and without supplying a dram of evidence.

Once again: Who is causing a “rift among allies”?

Lawrence Auster has written an excellent analysis of these events. He first notes Ms. Geller’s words:
In contrast, I spoke to Tommy Robinson at length; he issued his statement to SIOA. Considering his statement, I am not withdrawing my support for the EDL, [emphasis added] but I continue to be deeply concerned and will be watching how events unfold.

Mr. Auster then observes:

…but she did, most emphatically, withdraw her support from the EDL. See her statement above. Now, with her misleading phrase, “I am not withdrawing my support for the EDL,” she’s acting as though her withdrawal of support and total denunciation of the organization and her call for people to create a different organization that will replace the EDL never happened, but was, at most, merely a possibility she had raised, rather than a done deal.

[…]

To sum up: Geller, backed by Spencer, has stonewalled the entirely correct and reasonable demand by the signers of the open letter that she apologize for and withdraw her document denouncing the EDL. Geller and Spencer have also engaged in character assassination of the signers. At the same time, Geller has, very adroitly, claimed that because Robinson has admitted the guilty facts which she herself failed to provide (not true), and because Robinson has stated his determination to keep fighting against the anti-Semitic elements in his organization (true), she is not, as she previously had stated she had done, withdrawing her support from the organization. By saying this, she has in effect withdrawn her denunciation of the EDL, as the signers of the open letter demanded that she do, but she has done so without admitting that she is acceding to their demand.

Precisely.

In addition, there’s no way that a reasonable observer could conclude that Tommy Robinson’s statement “admits that there is a problem” in the EDL of the type alleged by Ms. Geller. Mr. Robinson admitted nothing of the sort, given that she referred to “neo-fascists that had infiltrated the administration of the group” — that is, that neo-fascists were part of the EDL’s leadership.

  • That is false.
  • That is why our open letter was first composed.
  • That is why an apology and a retraction were requested.

I’ll go out on a limb once again: Ms. Geller, if there is a “neo-fascist” in the leadership of the EDL, publish clear, unambiguous, factual evidence supporting your accusation.

If you do this, I will apologize and retract my previous criticisms on these matters. I will publish my apology and retraction in this space.

If you cannot produce this evidence, then I repeat what the signatories requested last Thursday in the open letter: Apologize for your calumnious words, and retract them.

The EDL deserve nothing less.

Afterword

It is distressing to see the vilification, name-calling, and general nastiness that have accompanied the events described above.

Ultimately, however, none of that matters. It’s not really important whether you like me or hate me. My intentions and motivations are irrelevant. This is about facts — or their absence.

Those readers who are interested in uncovering the truth of the matter should look at the evidence presented here, follow the links, check out the sources, and then make up your own minds. Either the EDL has been unjustly accused by Ms. Geller and Mr. Spencer, or it hasn’t.

I have been made aware that Robert Spencer has been sending out emails to various prominent writers, bloggers, and activists, soliciting public support for a statement against our open letter and those who signed it. It may even have been published already; I haven’t done any reading yet today.

For the record: I sent out no emails soliciting support for our open letter. Those who signed it were either part of the group that originally composed it, or they read the letter later and asked to be included.

When Ms. Geller’s post first appeared, a real-time meeting was convened. Those who participated are concerned about the Islamization of Europe. They were deeply alarmed by Ms. Geller’s gratuitous attack on the EDL, which is leading the grassroots European resistance to Islam. Most of the collaborators were Europeans, but Americans, Canadians, and Australians were also involved. The open letter was composed collectively, and then published simultaneously at various sites.

The current unpleasantness bears a close resemblance to the LGF Wars back in 2007 and 2008. For that reason, I don’t expect to get much support from prominent American writers and bloggers. If you look at the list of signers, you’ll notice that with the exception of Diana West — who, God bless her, is always willing to stick her head up over the parapet when the cause is just — no widely-known writer from the American MSM has signed on.

This is to be expected. Just as with Charles Johnson, well-known writers are unwilling to stand up to powerful people who have shown themselves to be relentless when publicly disagreed with. Prominent bloggers have seen what happens to people who have differences of opinion with Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer.

I can’t say that I blame them. If this were a large and important blog, I would probably have to make the same decision myself.

The upshot of all this is that only the “little people” are willing to stand up for the truth about the EDL and push back against the unfounded accusations that have been thrown at it.

Most of us who signed the letter are free to do so because we have nothing left to lose. We have no funding that can be cut off, and no major advertisers who can withdraw their custom. We don’t have book contracts that can be cancelled. We are never invited to be talking heads on TV news programs, and have no columns on major right-wing opinion sites from which we can be ousted. No doubt all of us have long since been excommunicated from any linkage at Jihad Watch and Atlas Shrugs, not to mention all the sites with which they have influence.

No, this group is made up of the little guys. We’re what I call the “Army of Midgets”. We’re runty, but feisty. And there are a lot more of us than the thirty or so who have so far signed the open letter.

Whether or not our efforts are successful, our integrity demands that we give voice to the truth.

Appendix: The original condemnatory post about the EDL, separated into sentences for clarity, and with notable phrases emphasized.

I was an early supporter of the EDL.

I liked who they were and what they were doing.

When the EDL first came on the scene, I noted their strong support of Israel: Israeli flags at their rallies, and forthright expressions of solidarity with the Jewish State in its resistance to the same relentless jihad that is advancing in Britain.

Almost immediately there came the inevitable charge from the jihad-loving Left that the group was “neo-Nazi,” “neofascist,” “white supremacist,” and more.

So I started investigating.

I found that they rejected the British National Party’s racial orientation, and that they had members who were Sikhs, Pakistanis, gays and other minorities, and even, eventually, a Jewish division.

The idea of pro-Israel neo-Nazis is a myth of the Left, and so the presence of the Jewish division was decisive.

I was troubled by the photos of EDL members giving the Nazi salute, but discovered that the EDL was aware of neo-Nazi attempts at infiltration, and had a policy of expelling anyone who expressed any kind of antisemitic or neofascist sentiments.

They even refused to allow people to be members of both the EDL and the BNP.

So it seemed to me at the time that the EDL was a genuine anti-jihad group, strongly pro-Israel as every legitimate anti-jihad group must be, since Israel is at the front lines of the global jihad, and resolutely rejecting racism and any form of actual neofascism.

However, it has become increasingly clear that the EDL has morphed and diverged from its original course.

They now have clearly been infiltrated by the worst kind of influences, something that had successfully staved off for years, and they’re no longer staving it off.

Roberta Moore, the leader of the Jewish Division, has broken with the EDL.

Perhaps the decentralization of the group or the loose grip Tommy Robinson held on its tether is responsible for this terrible shift in the EDL’s direction -- I don’t know.

But whatever the case may be, the EDL has done a Charles Johnson.

And they are now unrecognizable to me.

I am sure regular Atlas readers have noticed that some time ago I stopped covering their events -- I was waiting to see how things would shake out.

I was waiting to see if the forces of good would recapture the heart and soul of the group.

Alas, it was not to be.
