Greek prime minister George Papandreou called for national unity in the face of the country’s worsening debt crisis, and urged the public and the political parties to get behind the five-year austerity plan required by the IMF. However, the public is not heeding the prime minister’s call: according to the latest polls, almost half the country is against the austerity package. Eurozone finance group chief Jean-Claude Juncker warns that the euro crisis could spread to Belgium and Italy if the Greek bailout plan is not implemented quickly.

In other news, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has confirmed that the United States is engaged in talks with Taliban representatives in hopes of negotiating a peace settlement.
